  • 5 Useless Things in Your Bathroom

    Posted by Nick Steele

We have all been duped by the advertising companies. Shocked? Yeah, me neither. Apparently there are several things in your bathroom right now that are completely useless, at least according to Cracked.com

    1.  Acne cleansers.  The soaps and scrub pads marketed for acne problems will probably do more harm than good.  They're too aggressive and they dry out your skin, which doesn't necessarily help.  Your skin is irritated enough as it is.

A serious acne problem might need antibiotics.  But for normal acne, you just need to wash two or three times a day with warm water, or mild soap.

    2.  Mouthwash that contains alcohol.  The alcohol in mouthwash isn't for killing bacteria.  It's for keeping the menthol and eucalyptus oils mixed.  Otherwise, your mouth would smell best when you're DRUNK.  And we all know THAT'S not true.

Alcohol leaves you with a dry mouth.  And you need saliva to fight bacteria.  So a better strategy is to floss and brush regularly . . . including your tongue . . . and drink lots of water.  And use alcohol-free mouthwash if you have to.

    3.  Exfoliating creams.  They make you AGE FASTER.  When you peel off the top layer of skin, you might look better at first, because what's underneath is fresh and shiny.  But it's also more vulnerable.  Later on you'll have MORE sun damage, and more wrinkles.

    4.  Cuticle trimmers.  Your cuticles protect your fingernail beds from infection.  So if you cut them regularly to make your fingers look better, they might end up looking worse in the long run.  As in, nail fungus or other nasty conditions.

    5.  Shampoo.  First off, you can't do anything to ACTUALLY 'revitalize' your hair.  It's made up of DEAD CELLS.  And shampooing removes your hair's natural protection, making it dry and brittle.  Then you need the conditioner to replace the stuff you just stripped off.

You're better off washing with water, and using shampoo as little as possible . . . or not at all.

  • Bad Things That Are Good For You

    Posted by Nick Steele

All those things mom told you were LIES! Ok, maybe not lies but had she known that it was affecting your health to hold in your farts maybe she would have excused it.

According to medical research, your mother was WRONG about a lot of stuff.  Here are five bad habits that it turns out are actually GOOD for you.

    1.   BITING YOUR NAILS helps expose your body to new germs . . . but in very small numbers.  That lets your immune system prepare antibodies to fight them without the risk of getting sick.  And picking your nose and eating it does the same thing.

    2.  BURPING protects your body from getting damaged by stomach acid.  If you leave the gas inside, it can loosen the muscle that separates your stomach from your esophagus, and allow stomach acid to splash out and cause heartburn.

    3.  PASSING GAS prevents you from having a buildup of gas in your intestines.  And that can cause damage . . . or at least a lot of pain.

    4.  EATING IN BED can help you digest your food better.  Stress causes your body to interrupt digestion . . . so if you're relaxed and horizontal, your body breaks everything down completely.

    5.  SPITTING helps your breathing . . . especially if you're exercising.  When you exercise, you breathe through your mouth, which causes inflammation in your throat.  So spitting helps to clear your breathing passages.

  • Sip On this 4/9

Here are my stories from Sip On This!

On Saturday, a 60-year-old woman managed to rob a Fifth Third Bank branch in Clinton Township, Michigan . . . using ONLY the power of her SPAGHETTI SAUCE.

Around 11:30 A.M., she went into the bank and demanded money.  She told the teller she had a bomb in her bag, and put the bag on the counter.  The teller saw a hard object in the bag, and believed it was a bomb.

She gave the woman an undisclosed amount of money . . . and the woman took off.

She left the bag with the "bomb" in it behind, so the bomb squad came in and scanned it . . . and found it was just a couple of cans of spaghetti sauce.  Police are still searching for the woman.

On Sunday, 33-year-old Osvaldo Quiroz-Lopez of Queens, New York was in Times Square, dressed as COOKIE MONSTER and taking photos with tourists and kids.

Around 3:20 P.M. he posed with a two-year-old.  Then he asked the kid's mom for a $2 tip.  And when she refused to pay him, he made things way worse . . . by SHOVING THE LITTLE KID.

Osvaldo was arrested and charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

  • PHOTO: Captain America: The Winter Soldier

    Posted by Nick Steele

We are all excited to see the latest installment in the story of Steve Rogers AKA Captain America, in the latest movie titled "Captain America: Winter Soldier"

They have just begun shooting recently and have released the first photo and plot synopsis.

Scarlett Johansson will be a big collaborator this time around, the studio has revealed, with a press release that says the film will pick up just after The Avengers, Steve Rogers finally coming to terms with how he's now in modern times and still hasn't done a montage of comedically misunderstanding technology. Once he gets that out of the way, he "teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C."

Also confirmed is legendary actor Robert Redford, who will be playing "a senior leader within the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization."

  • Fire Breathing...Bridge?

    Posted by Nick Steele

Now I'm not sure what the purpose of a fire breathing dragon bridge serves but honestly I don't care. Every bridge should have a fire breathing dragon on it!

This is series of photographs (plus a video) of Vietnam's recently completed $85-million Dragon Bridge, which spans the Han River in the port city of Da Nang. The color changing dragon lights up thanks to 15,000 Philips LEDs and can even breath fire and water from its mouth.

  • Knuckle Myth Debunked and 9 More

    Posted by Nick Steele

Almost all of us have, at some time, been chided by a parent or grandparent who has been mislead by an old wives’ tale. Their intentions are always good, but unfortunately they are misguided. There are thousands of old wives’ tales – ranging from the seemingly logical to the outright bizarre.

This is a list of ten of the most common old wives’ tales which are, in fact, bunkum! Did we forget any? Leave them in the comments.

    10 Feed a Fever Starve a Cold

    Cold

In fact, both colds and fevers cause dehydration – so liquids are essential when suffering from either. In addition, missing out on food when you are sick is never a good idea as food provides the body with the sustenance it needs to get healthy. So, you should feed a fever and feed a cold. This, of course, does not mean to overeat – it means to eat healthy balanced meals.

    Eating Before Swimming

    515368724 009B9B0705

There is an old wives’ tale that says that if you eat within an hour of swimming you will get cramp. The Red Cross says that eating directly prior to swimming does not increase risk of cramp at all. They do, however, recommend at least waiting for digestion to begin if you have eaten a particularly fatty meal. They also recommend that you not eat gum or food while you are swimming.

    Chocolate Causes Acne

     Treatshophomemadechocolatet

There is actually not an iota of evidence to support this tale – no food type (not just chocolate) can cause acne or bad skin. Needless to say, eating too much chocolate or sugary food is unhealthy for the body, but it will not cause skin problems. Acne is actually caused by changes in the lower layers of the skin surrounding hair follicles.

    Carrots Improve your Vision

    873763332 7637Caf012

It is possible that this tale came about due to allied propaganda during the second world war when rumors were spread that the British airmen had excellent night vision due to eating carrots. The myth was spread to stop the Germans from discovering that the British were using Radar. While carrots contain vitamin A which is good for healthy eyes, eating lots of them will do nothing to improve your vision.

    Catching a Cold

    Wet-Hair

There are a huge number of myths about how to catch a cold, but in fact there is only one way to catch a cold virus – by direct contact with the virus itself. You can stand outside on a cold night with wet hair and your chances of getting a cold do not increase at all. The reason that colds seem to spread more in Winter is not from the cold itself, but the fact that people tend to live more often indoors and this increases your chances of coming in to contact with a sufferer. It is also worth mentioning that if you get a cold in your nose, you can not stop it from spreading to your chest if the virus is programmed to attack you there. Most cold medicines are completely pointless and do nothing to help except alleviate the pain through the inclusion of painkillers.

    5  TV and Eyesight

    461251680 9563638A5C

My parents constantly told me off for sitting too close to the television when I was a kid – I was told that my eyesight would deteriorate from doing so. The same was also said of reading in dim light. In fact, neither of these things do any damage to the eyes. It should be noted, however, that spending too much time in front of the TV is not good for children (regardless of how close they sit) as research has shown that children who spend 10 hours or more in front of the television each week are more likely to become overweight, aggressive, and slower in school.

    Masturbation Causes Blindness

    Domokun-Gokillskittens

The tale states that masturbation will cause blindness (in France it is said it will cause deafness). This is not true (at least not completely) and the idea has probably been spread in order to prevent children from masturbating for religious reasons. Curiously, sperm contains quite a lot of zinc, and a serious zinc deficiency can cause a decline in vision. However, it is nearly impossible to cause a zinc deficiency through masturbating.

    Knuckles and Arthritis

    Article17204

While it is true that constant knuckle cracking can reduce the strength of your grip and cause swelling, it does not lead to arthritis. There are many causes of arthritis (such as trauma or infection of a joint, or old age), but knuckle cracking is not one of them.

    Spicy Food and Ulcers

    Spicy Chicken Masala Curry

If a person suffers from an ulcer, spicy food can often aggravate it; however, ulcers are not caused by spicy food at all – if they were, ulcers would be pandemic in many eastern nations. An ulcer is usually caused by overuse of medications like aspirin and anti-inflammatories.

    Toads and Warts

    R134140 450689

It is almost certain that this strange old wives’ tale has come about because of the appearance of wart-like growths on many toads. In fact, these growths are not human compatible at all. Warts are caused by viruses and they are almost always exclusive to a particular genus of creature. Human’s cannot catch warts from other animals, and animals can not catch human warts. The most common human wart virus is called the human papillomavirus.

Cyclops from the X-Men has a perfectly good reason for wearing his glasses/goggles. It's not because he likes to view the world in red, it's because its the only thing that can contain his heat vision! Apparently this cat just doesn't care about that....

  • Sip On This 4/3

    Posted by Nick Steele

Here are my stories from today's Sip On This!

A new survey asked people if they're annoyed by virtual displays of affection, like couples posting romantic messages on each other's Facebook walls.  And about one in four people say yeah, 'VDAs' are annoying.

58% of people say they don't like when people post about breakups online, and 33% don't like seeing couples referring to each other by their pet names online.

And only 10% of people say they don't like it when people use a couples photo as their main profile picture.

     SO KNOCK IT OFF!

Krystal Hensley of Washington County, Tennessee has an eight-year-old daughter in second grade.  This school year, the girl has been sent home from school TWENTY FOUR times . . . for SMELLING BAD.

Krystal says, quote, "They just say it's a foul odor... they send her home at least once a month.  She's been to a doctor and it's not a medical problem.  You go to school to learn, not to be sent home."

Krystal also says her daughter takes a bath every day, but when school officials asked the girl the last time she took a bath or a shower, she said she COULDN'T REMEMBER. The Department of Children's Services DID investigate the house at one point.  It's not clear what happened in their investigation, but they say the case is now closed.
